Vietti, Barolo Monvigliero, 2019 (1.5L)
Monvigliero is Verduno's crown jewel—a south-facing amphitheater of ancient fossilized marl that produces Barolo with Burgundian grace: more floral and perfumed than powerful. Vietti, one of Piedmont's most storied houses (the family produced their first single-vineyard Barolo in 1961), debuted their Monvigliero bottling with the 2018 vintage, making this 2019 only the second release. The vines average forty-four years old, planted in Sant'Agata Marl—a layered formation of clay, silt, and sand deposited seven to eleven million years ago. Sixty percent of the fruit was fermented as whole grapes, the rest destemmed, followed by thirty months in large Slavonian and French oak botti. The 2019 vintage delivered a classic profile: no spring frost, a warm summer tempered by cool September nights, and an October harvest of superb quality. Wild strawberry, rose, cherry, and fine spices unfold on a palate of silky, persistent tannins. In magnum, this wine has decades of evolution ahead.
